BREVE HISTORIAL

 

Desde muy pequeño, me sinti atraído por la ópera, y a los 17 años ingrese en la prestigiosa “Coral Polifónica El Eco”, de La Coruña (la más antigua de la península Ibérica), siendo desde entonces tenor solista de la misma.

 

En el año 1970, fui escuchado en Milán, por la soprano aragonesa Elvira de Hidalgo(maestra de María Callas) quien me animó a comenzar los estudios de canto con ella.

Escuchado igualmente en audición privada por el tenor Alfredo Kraus, este se brindó de manera desinteresada, a darme clases de canto, siguiendo al tenor en sus viajes por Italia, Inglaterra y España.

Dichos desplazamientos fueron posibles gracias a las ayudas en forma de becas, donadas por la “Fundación Barrié”, y la “Excma. Diputación Provincial de La Coruña”.

Realizé conciertos en  Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao y La Coruña, así como fuí  el intérprete principal de la ópera “Werther” de Massenet, en la Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid. Actué en Programas de Radio, tanto en Madrid, como en Barcelona. Actuaciones en la TVG (Televisión de Galicia).

 

He dado clases de canto, a actuales profesores de dicha materia, en diversos Conservatorios de Galicia.

 

He participado en la presentación del libro “Alfredo Kraus, una concepción del canto”,  del prestigioso musicólogo gallego Arturo Reverter, como conferenciante y como cantante.

 

He impartido unas “masterclas”, en La Coruña, e igualmente e participado el mes de agosto del 2011, como ponente en el  Curso sobre la “Voz Profesional y Artística”, organizado por la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, en la ciudad de Baeza (Jaén), en la Sede Antonio Machado.

 

En marzo de 2012, impartí  diez clases magistrales así como una conferencia sobre “Alfredo Kraus, el artista y el amigo”, en la ciudad de Badajoz, invitado por la “Asociación María Coronada”.

 

He sido invitado por la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canarias en 2013 y donde pronuncie un conferencia en el Aula de Piedra de dicha Universidad, e impartí unas Masterclas.

 

Igualmente fuí invitado por la “Asociación Lírica Asturiana Alfredo Kraus”, en donde ofrecí una conferencia, en la ciudad de Oviedo, sobre mi inolvidable maestro  el tenor Alfredo Kraus.

Tambien dí la conferencia sobre Alfredo Kraus, en el Conservatorio Profesional de Música de la ciudad de Lugo, y dí unas clases de canto a alumnos de dicho conservatorio

 

Igualmente, he dado una conferencia sobre Alfredo Kraus, en la Delegación Provincial de la ONCE en La Coruña, y más tarde en la Fundación ABANCA

 

En diciembre del 2018 he impartido unas masterclas en la localidad italiana de Mosciano Sant’Angelo, participando igualmente en un concierto con mis alumnos.

 

En estos momentos mi ilusión es trasladar los conocimientos técnico adquiridos (durante los años que estudie con Alfredo Kraus), a jóvenes cantantes, con dudas técnicas e interpretativas. Me interesa trabajar con mujeres y hombres, pero solo en las siguientes especialidades del canto: Opera, zarzuela, y canción lírica. Excluyola ópera alemana, y el lied por no conocer ni el idioma ni el estilo, que nunca he practicado. Creo que es una “obligación moral” la que me obliga de alguna manera a tratar de ayudar a los nuevas generaciones de artistas, y trasladarles a los mismos lo que hemos aprendido al lado de tan grandes cantantes, como en mi caso ha sido al lado de Alfredo Kraus.

 

El último día del curso, daría una conferencia sobre “Alfredo Kraus, el artista y el amigo”, en la cual, además de hacer una breve semblanza biográfica del tenor, hablaría de mi relación personal con la familia Kraus, recordando anécdotas personales vividas con el gran tenor canario.

BRIEF HISTORY

 

From a very young age, I was attracted to opera, and at 17 I entered the prestigious "El Eco Polyphonic Coral", in La Coruña (the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula), being since then a soloist of it.

 

In 1970, I was heard in Milan, by the Aragonese soprano Elvira de Hidalgo (Maria Callas's teacher) who encouraged me to start singing studies with her.

Also heard in private audition by tenor Alfredo Kraus, he gave himself selflessly, to teach me singing, following the tenor in his travels in Italy, England and Spain.

These displacements were possible thanks to grants in the form of scholarships, donated by the "Barrié Foundation", and the "Excma. Provincial Council of La Coruña ”.

I have given singing lessons, to current teachers of this subject, in various Galician Conservatories.

 

I participated in the presentation of the book "Alfredo Kraus, a conception of singing", by the prestigious Galician musicologist Arturo Reverter, as a lecturer and as a singer.

 

I have taught a “masterclas”, in La Coruña, and also participated in the month of August 2011, as a speaker in the Course on “Professional and Artistic Voice”, organized by the International University of Andalusia, in the city of Baeza ( Jaén), at Antonio Machado Headquarters.

 

In March 2012, I taught ten master classes as well as a conference on “Alfredo Kraus, the artist and the friend”, in the city of Badajoz, invited by the “María Coronada Association”.

 

I have been invited by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canarias in 2013 and where I gave a lecture in the Stone Classroom of that University, and taught some Masterclas.

 

I was also invited by the "Asturian Lyric Association Alfredo Kraus", where I gave a lecture, in the city of Oviedo, about my unforgettable teacher the tenor Alfredo Kraus.

I also gave the lecture on Alfredo Kraus, at the Professional Conservatory of Music in the city of Lugo, and gave some singing lessons to students of the conservatory

 

I have also given a lecture on Alfredo Kraus, at the ONCE Provincial Delegation in La Coruña, and later at the ABANCA Foundation

 

In December 2018 I taught a masterclass in the Italian town of Mosciano Sant’Angelo, also participating in a concert with my students.

 

At the moment my illusion is to transfer the acquired technical knowledge (during the years I studied with Alfredo Kraus), to young singers, with technical and interpretative doubts. I am interested in working with women and men, but only in the following singing specialties: Opera, zarzuela, and lyrical song. I exclude German opera, and lied for not knowing neither the language nor the style, which I have never practiced. I think it is a “moral obligation” that forces me in some way to try to help new generations of artists, and transfer to them what we have learned next to such great singers, as in my case it has been next by Alfredo Kraus.

 

On the last day of the course, I would give a lecture on “Alfredo Kraus, the artist and the friend”, in which, in addition to making a brief biographical semblance of the tenor, I would talk about my personal relationship with the Kraus family, remembering personal anecdotes lived with The great canary tenor.

Después de escuchar este fantástico CD uno se plantea que bien tendría que haberse titulado “El milagro de una voz”, emulando aquel otro que grabara el mítico Lauri-Volpi cuando contaba con 81 años de edad. Porque el milagro de la voz es siempre llevarla al límite: en el registro, en la paleta de matices y también, lo que es muy poco frecuente, en la longevidad del aparato vocal. Sólo cuando se dispone de una óptima técnica vocal se puede alcanzar ese milagro de superar con éxito la barrera del tiempo.

 

Enrique Paz, nuestro querido tenor coruñés, a buen seguro aprendió de su maestro y referente Alfredo Kraus, la técnica que le ha permitido que su voz perdure, ofreciéndonos, a quienes le seguimos, una auténtica lección del buen cantar, del buen decir. Siempre me gusta recordar que tuve el privilegio de acompañar a Enrique Paz en los primeros años ochenta y no olvido la impresión que me produjo escuchar su voz limpia, bien timbrada, de nítida dicción y hermoso color, mientras interpretaba lo más granado del gran repertorio operístico de tenor lírico. Cuarenta años después de ese recuerdo, la voz de Enrique Paz sigue atesorando los mismos valores y, aún más, si cabe, con la sabiduría que aporta la edad respecto de la capacidad expresiva, cualidad ésta que recorre todas las arias de esta grabación.

 

El presente CD es, en suma, una buena muestra de esa técnica (en toda la amplia expresión del término) que posee Enrique Paz y que le permite, a la edad de 70 años, afrontar con éxito la cuidada interpretación de aquellas grandes arias que todos tenemos en el ideario del repertorio de tenor. Una buena ocasión, pues, para disfrutar y sorprendernos de que el milagro de la voz se haya hecho patente aquí, en La Coruña, en este rincón del Atlántico.

After listening to this fantastic CD, one thinks that it should have been titled “The miracle of a voice”, emulating the other one that recorded the mythical Lauri-Volpi when he was 81 years old. Because the miracle of the voice is always to take it to the limit: in the register, in the palette of nuances and also, which is very rare, in the longevity of the vocal apparatus. Only when you have an optimal vocal technique can you achieve that miracle of successfully overcoming the time barrier.

 

Enrique Paz, our beloved tenor from Coruña, surely learned from his teacher and referent Alfredo Kraus, the technique that has allowed his voice to last, offering us, to whom we follow, an authentic lesson of good singing, of good saying. I always like to remember that I had the privilege of accompanying Enrique Paz in the early eighties and I do not forget the impression that came from hearing his clean, well-stamped voice, of clear diction and beautiful color, while interpreting the best of the great operatic repertoire Lyric. Forty years after that memory, Enrique Paz's voice continues to treasure the same values and, even more, if possible, with the wisdom that age brings with respect to expressive capacity, this quality that runs through all the arias of this recording.

 

This CD is, in short, a good example of this technique (in all the broad expression of the term) that Enrique Paz possesses and that allows him, at the age of 70, to successfully face the careful interpretation of those great arias that We all have in the tenor repertoire ideology. A good occasion, then, to enjoy and surprise us that the miracle of the voice has become evident here, in La Coruña, in this corner of the Atlantic.
